My basic requirements for a home automation system are:

I need to control 4 basic functions throughout the house: lights, temperature, security system and sound.
I need to be able to control it with a touch-capable device, either iOS or Android based, mainly because I need to control the system from my cellphone from anywhere.
It needs to have some sort of SDK. I want to be able to create custom programs (especifically a custom web interface) myself, even if there is one available from the manufacturer.
No hard-core hacking. While I want to understand the parts that are involved, any system that needs a lot of hacking or a complicated installation in order to get it to work is out of the question, I just want a simple setup that will do what I need, and that works all the time.

As I learn more I may add more things like specific appliances, but with the 4 basics described above I'd be happy.
