Automating Lights

After choosing the core of my setup, I started changing some light switches which is kind of the easiest place to get started, and also something you can see working right away.

There is basically just one choice when it comes to light switches: Using a dimmer or an on/off switch. They cost the same (about $40), so it really just depends whether a dimmer makes sense or not for each light you want to control around the house.

Installation is pretty straight forward, each switch has the instructions and diagrams inside the box. The only thing that confused me a first was what they meant by "load" and "line" on the cable labels. Basically line is the main power, and load is the cable that goes up to the lamp. This may seem obvious (it does now) but just keep that in mind. Other than that it's no different than changing a regular light switch except you have to connect the neutral and ground cable as well, which is detailed in the instructions.

Note: You will probably want to try sending some commands to the first switch you install, when you do make sure you have your main controller connected to an outlet near the new switch as it may not respond to your commands when you're far away. This happens because of signal noise, since you would not yet have a "network" of devices repeating signals, your command may get lost. As you install more Insteon devices around the house this problem goes away and you can have your main controller anywhere in the house.

Also, keep in mind is that they don't come with a wall plate, so make sure to get them in the size you need as well so you don't have to make an extra trip to your hardware store, or have to make another order for some plates like I did :)
